Candles burning has roots that stretch back to ancient times as a part of religious ceremony, ritual, and magical rites. Most spiritualist and metaphysical practitioners will use and burn candles for metaphysical effects to help manifest prayers and desires. Candles have a unique role in our society and they link us to our past. They help convey messages of love, spirituality, and secret wishes.

The Egyptians and Cretans made candles from beeswax as early as 3000 B.C.E.[1]

In addition, clay candle holders found in Egypt date back to 400 B.C.E.[2]

In early China and Japan, tapers were made with wax from insects and seeds, wrapped in paper.[3]

Qin Shi Huang (259–210 B.C.E.) was the first emperor of the Chinese Qin Dynasty (221–206 B.C.E.). His mausoleum, which was rediscovered in the 1990s, twenty-two miles east of Xi’an, contained candles made from whale fat.

Candles are embraced by nearly every faith, creed, and nationality.  There is just something peculiar about a candle flame. Each one of us have participated in candle magic as early as childhood when we were directed to make a wish as we blew out our birthday candles. The simple act of focusing your mind on a symbol to create and manifest your desires, is basic metaphysical science.

Any type of candle can be used for candle magic as long as it has been cleansed and consecrated prior to use. Although beeswax candles are higher in price than store bought candles, they are more powerful because they are produced from nature. As with any other tool, the candle made by the practitioner for a specific purpose captures the energy of the practitioner. Many experienced Witches will use only candles they have crafted themselves because of this.

Cleansing & Consecrating:
This is a very important step and should not be omitted. Cleansing removes all the negative energies that the candle has picked up along the way. As with all supplies you want your candles to be as free of psychic debris as possible. Submerge the candle in sea salt and ask for cleansing.

Naturally candles have polarities. Everything in our program has positive and negative polarities, as it is an electro magnetically based program.

Dressing a candle is no more than putting your vibration, thoughts and outcome you want into the candles vibration force. [This works the same way with crystals and stones]. Dress the candle with oil. Use whatever oil you prefer or what a specific spell asks you to use. Rub oil on the candle in a downward motion from the top to the middle and then from the bottom to the middle.

Our ancestors were very in tune with working with candles in the early 19th century there were many spiritualist churches that worked with candles. These churches also were havens for people that didn’t have a place to work with their candles many of these spiritual churches had a service called “setting lights”, an individual in the church was in charge of  burning candles for people that had no place to burn their candles. Some would even leave little slips of paper with prayer request with their burning candle. The individual would inform the person how the candle was burning , fast, slow, low flicker, high flicker, by watching the action of the candle this tells you if your prayer request was heard or would manifest.

The first time I worked with a candle I was having some family communications issues. I and my mom had an argument we were not getting alone very well, my Mom is stubborn. She usually doesn’t apologize when she is in the wrong. I didn’t know what to do to fix the communication issue, I just got fed up one day I grabbed a white candle I had, it was one that was already encased in glass. I cleaned the outside really well poked some holes in the top of the candle, poured in olive oil. I found a red ink pen tore off a small piece of notebook paper and wrote love and forgiveness on it, next I found a pic of my Mom. I lit the candle fold the paper up put it on top of the pic and put both pic and paper under the candle as it burned. As it was burning I kept repeating love and forgiveness I love you Mom and I forgive you I did this for maybe two hours. Occasionally , I would take her pic and look at it and kiss it and say I love and forgive you Mom. I would look at the candle flame and keep repeating love and forgiveness. I tell you it worked within the two hours my mom called and apologize she has never did that before. I was floored I didn’t think I was going to get a response that fast or one at all. But I knew I was tired of the fussy stuff and I wanted it to end, after that happened I have continued to work with candles.
